  • offenders stayed and laboured in Australia for 7 years
  • some felt it was too expensive + not a strong deterrent to crime.
  • too harsh on criminals and families
  • more prisons had been built and prisons were used instead of transportation
  • Australia no longer needed labours because of the discovery of gold
