Chap. 27 : Plant Tissues Flashcards
(11 cards)
Define Ground Tissue
Tissues that make up a bulk of the plant body
Define Vascular Tissue
Tissue that distributes water and nutrients to all parts of plant body
Purpose of dermal tissue
Cover and protect the plant body
Differences between eudicots and monocots
Eudicots- petals in multiples of 4/5
- network veins
- pollen grain has 3 pores
- vascular bundle is organised in a ring around the stem
Monocots :
- petals in multiples of 3
- parallel veins
- pollen grains with one pore
- vascular bundles randomly present throughout ground tissue
Describe and explain the parenchyma
Appearance: thin flexible cell walls
Function: Photosynthesis, storage, secretion, tissue repair.
Describe and explain the role of Collenchyma
Definition: a simple tissue composed of living cells, it has unevenly thickened walls (with pectin)
Role: provides flexible support for growing cells
Describe and explain the role of Sclerenchyma
Definition: tissue that composed of cells that die when they are mature.
Role: they provide sturdiness because the cell walls still contain a high proportion of lignin and cellulose.
Describe and explain epidermis
It is dermal tissue forming the outermost tissue of a young plant
Secretes waxy substances on outward cells to prevent water loss.
In older stems, epidermis is replaced by periderm
Describe and explain Xylem
Complex vascular tissue that consists of vessel elements and tracheids.
Both cell types are dead and waterproof.
What are the different types of stems
Stolons, Rhizomes, Bulbs, Stem Tubers, Cladodes, Corms
