Plant Form and stem Cells Flashcards
(7 cards)
Difference between animals and plants
Animals Are:
Mobile, determinate development, little developmental plasticity, not regenerative
Plants are:
Mobile, indeterminate development, lots of developmental plasticity
Types of development
Determinate development: growth ceases after maturation or after a certain period of time
Indeterminate: growth that continues throughout life of individual
What is developmental plasticity?
The extent to which environment of early life affects the phenotypic traits in later life of individual
What are the phases of plant development?
Embryogenesis, Vegetative, Reproductive
Types of meristem
Primary Meristem: root apical, shoot( axillary) apical
Lateral Meristem( in woody plants): Vascular cambium, Cork cambium
What is Phyllotaxy/ phyllotaxis ?
Arrangement of leaves and branches around the stem
Types of Phyllotaxy and examples
Alternate: grasses
Spiral: sunflower, pinecones
Opposite: Peppermint (Labiatae/Lamiaceae)
Whorled: sticky willy ( Galium aparine)
