What is the scale?

A

The scale of a map is the ratio of the distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the ground.

A

1:50,000. this means every centimeter on the map is equal to 50,000 cm/ 500m on the ground. Therefore every 2cm on an OSI map is 1km

A

Grid references are used to locate and area or an exact location on an os map

How do you identify height on an os map

A

Colour contours, triangulation, pillars, spot heights and summit heights

What do the colours mean

A

Green: lowlands areas of up to 200m
And as the colour changes from green, to light cream to light brown to dark brown, it indicates an upland area

Contour lines

A

Lines showing areas of equal height. The height in meters is written on them. They are placed 10m apart (height). The closer the lines the steeper the slope.

Triangulation pillars

A

These triangle shapes show where there is a concrete pillar used by map makers. They are usually found on mountain peaks or hilltops. The height of the mountain is given in metres beside the triangle.

Spot heights
These can be found anywhere on a map showing height in metres of a particular place. They are represented by a small, black dot with a number beside it.

Summit height
This shows the height of the summit or peak in colour. The three different colours- green, orange and brown all indicate what height the summit is

Direction
Directions are usually given using the compass cardinal points of the compass - north east south west

Other cardinal points
In between the cardinal points are other compass points, they are - N: NNE, NE, ENE. E: ESE, SE, SSE. S: SSW, SW, WSW. W: WNW, NW, NNW
