Chapter 1 Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is physiology?
- study of living organism function
- function is related to structure
- uses anatomy, histology and molecular biology
What are traits of a mammal?
- homeothermic endotherms
- amniote
- parental care
- hair
What is homeostasis?
The relatively stable physical and chemical composition of the internal body that Is the result of the regulatory system
What is a steady state of homeostasis?
A dynamic state where there is no net change and requires energy input
What is homeostatic Equilibrium?
A static state where there is no net change and does not require energy
External environment
Dynamic
Internal environment
Static
What is extracellular fluid?
Part of the internal environment, otherwise known as blood. Contains intercellular fluid and plasma.
What is intracellular fluid?
Fluid inside the cell
What is a homeostatic reflex arc?
Neural or hormonal components that meditate a reflex. Usually includes a receptor, afferent pathway, integrating center, efferent pathway and effector
Homeostatic Regulatory mechanism
Contains negative feedback and positive feedback
Negative feedback
Response is opposite to the stimulus input, it decreases the signal
Positive feedback
Response is the same as stimulus input. Increases the signal
What is reactive homeostasis
Response to changes that have already occurred
What is predicted homeostasis?
Response is initiated in anticipation of a predicted change
