Chapter 1 Flashcards
(5 cards)
Give examples of reversible reactions.
2SO2 + O2 => 2S03
N2 + 3H2 => 2NH3
What is the law of mass action?
C.M Guldberg and P.Waage proposed it in 1864. It states that the rate at which a substance reacts is proportional to its mass while the rate of a reaction is proportional to the product of the active masses of the reactants.
What is meant by the term active mass?
Active mass represents the concentration of reactants and products in mold.dm’3 of a solution expressed in square brackets.
What is the equilibrium constant?
Kc = kf / kr, where c denotes molar concentration at equilibrium.
Equilibrium constant is defined as the ratio of the product of concentration to the product of the concentration of reactants, each raised to the power equal to the coefficient in a balanced equation.
Kc is independent but relies on temperature.
