Anatomical Position
Common frame of reference used to describe all body parts and regions.
Anterior (ventral)
Front in humans
Posterior (dorsal)
Back in humans
Superior (cranial)
Towards head
Inferior (caudal)
Towards tail
Proximal
Closer to point of origin
Distal
More distant from point of origin
Medial
Closer to midline
Lateral
Further away from midline
Superficial
Structures closer to surface of body
Deep
Further away from surface
Axial
Head, neck, and trunk
Appendicular
upper and lower limbs or appendages
Sagittal plane
Divides body or body part into right and left sections
Midsagittal plane
Divides body or body part into equal left and right sections
Parasagittal plane
Divides body or body part into unequal right and left sections
Frontal plane
Divides body or body part into anterior and posterior sections
Transverse plane
Divides body or body part into Superior and inferior sections or proximal and distal sections for structures of appendicular region
Posterior body cavity
Subdivided into the cranial cavity and the vertebral cavity
Cranial cavity
Within skull, protects brain
Vertebral cavity
Within vertebral column protects spinal cord
Cerebrospinal fluid
Fluid protecting the spinal cord
Thoracic cavity
And its subdivisions are superior to the diaphragm. Divided into the plural cavities, mediastinum, pericardial cavity.
Abdominopelvic cavity
Its subdivisions are inferior to the diaphragm. Subdivided into Superior abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity. Contains organs from several systems
