Chapter 1 Flashcards
Scientific Method (18 cards)
What is Biological Literacy?
The ability to use scientific inquiry to think about and question real world issues.
What are the 5 parts of the Scientific Method?
Observation, Hypothesis, Prediction, Experiment, Conclusion.
What is Observation?
Gathering info from around you.
What is a Hypothesis?
Make an explanation of the possible changes seen; a general statement.
What is a Prediction?
Make a testable idea; if -> then specific statement.
What is a Conclusion?
Gather final info and make changes if needed.
What is a Null Hypothesis?
Saying there’s no relationship or no effect between things.
What is a Theory?
Explained hypotheses for a Natural phenomenon that are supported by empirical data.
What is a treatment?
any experimental condition applied to a study.
What is an Experimental Group?
A group that is exposed to the treatment.
What is a Control Group?
A group that is treated in the same way as the experimental group, except that they don’t get the treatment.
What is a Independent Variable?
What is being tested; experimental group only.
What is a Dependent Variable?
What is being measured and what gets compared; both groups.
What is a Standardized Variable?
Anything that can impact the experiment.
What is a Blind Experiment design?
The experimental subjects don’t know which treatment (if any) they are receiving.
What is a Double Blind experiment?
Neither the subjects or experimenters know which treatment is which.
What is Pseudoscience?
A scientific-sounding claim without any trusted proven science proof.
What is Anecdotal Observation?
Based on one or a few observations, people make claims about whether there is or is not a relationship between 2 things.
