Globalization
The increasing interconnectedness among societies
Cultural globalization
Involves the spread of pop culture, and the global diffusion of more traditional cultural ideas found in religious and ethnic communities
Political globalization
Is the spread of political ideas, values, norms, practices, and policies
Global politics
The politics of global social relations in which the pursuit of power interests, order and justice transcends regions and continents
International relations
The study of the interactions of states and other actors in the international system.
Non-state actors
Are any participant in global politics that is neither acting in the name of the government nor created and served by the government. They can be NGO’s, terrorist networks, or global crime syndicates
Nation
a community of people who share a common sense of identity
Realism
a theoretical approach that analyzes all international relations. Humans are at best self interest - consumed with the pursuit of power
Liberalism
a theoretical approach that argues for human rights, parliamentary democracy and free trade which maintaining all goals
Marxism
a theory critical of the status quo or dominant capitalist paradigm. Marxist’s ideal is a stateless and classless society
Nation-states
(countries) are the most important actors in global politics as they are the actors that engage in diplomatic relations and sign the treaties that create the legal foundation for world politics and go to war
Why are theories important?
They allow you to decide which facts matter and which do not
