How is communication symbolic
symbols are arbitrarily selected representations of something with no direct connection to what they represent. Though sometimes used interchangeably symbol and sign’s are different. Signs are consequence or indicators of something specific which can’t change by their actions or labels
communication as action
the act of sending messages, whether they are received or not
communication as interaction
an exchange of information between 2 or more people
communication as transaction
the construction of shared meanings and understandings between 2 or more people
constitutive approach to communication
communication can create or bring into existence something that has not been there before, such as an agreement, a contract, or an identity
how meaning is established
since symbols are arbitrary they can have multiple meanings that are subject to change. The meaning assigned to a symbol has been socially constructed
how is communication cultural
culture influences communication , and vice vera. each time someone communicates they are taking knowledge for granted. Culture is accomplished, performed, and enacted through communication
how is communication relational
all communication has a content level and relational level, meaning that it conveys information, every message indicates how the sender of the message are socially and personally related.
