Q

The feeling of being very sad

A

sorrow

for you I could pretend
I was happy
I could hide away the sorrow

Sorrow is a much deeper, intense and stronger feeling, while sadness is more superficial

You feel sorrow when someone you love dies and you mourn for their death, you feel empty inside.

Sadness can range from “just being sad” to being depressed or feeling sorrow

Q

if you’re притворяться, симулировать an emotion, illness, etc. you pretend to have it

A

Feign

for you I could find strength

Feign and pretend are generally synonyms, meaning to act as if something is true, even though it isn’t. Pretend is MUCH more common, and is often associated with children. For example if children are playing a game where they are pretending to be medieval knights or something, it is sometimes called to “play pretend.”

Feign is a bit more formal. To “feign ignorance” is to pretend you don’t know something when you actually do, and you would never really use “feign” for something like children playing. I would say it’s more often used negatively.

“Feint” when in a fight, you act like you are going to attack one place, but at the last second change and attack somewhere else to confuse an opponent. Unless you are talking about sword fights or something you won’t see this word very often.

A

Cause

he’s never giving me any cause for concern a hopeless cause

Таким образом, разница между причиной - reason и причиной - cause состоит в том, что reason – это мотив, объяснение, оправдание, повод или основание для какого-либо действия (reason for being late – причина опоздания, reason for breakup – причина расставания), в то время как cause – это обстоятельство, повлекшее другое явление (cause of fire – причина пожара, cause of death – причина смерти).
