Colonists began to view themselves as Americans, instead of Virginians, Pennsylvanians, Etc.

The colonists’ view of Britain changed, instead of seeing Britain as protecting them, seeing Britain as a danger to their liberties.

Patrick Henry of Virginia gave a famous speech, saying Give me liberty or give me death, and calling for war.
