A

being far upriver provided protection from ocean attack;
The river was a good escape route from Indians;
And the river was good for trade with goods

18
Q

What were the disadvantages of Jamestown’s location?

A

1 During high tide the river would get salty from the ocean and sicken the settlers.
2 the Swampland had mosquitoes that carry diseases,
3 they didn’t have a clue how to grow crops
4 there was no gold which is what they were looking for
5 There were harsh winters
6 There were Indians that would attack them
7 they had poorly made homes

19
Q

Be familiar with the people who first sell Virginia. What were their backgrounds? how did their attitudes contribute to problems faced by the Jamestown Settlement?

A

They were gentlemen adventurers, soldiers, or people trying to escape dead, there were all men, they wanted to find gold come and get rich, and return to England, and they didn’t bring their families, and they argued because they didn’t want to work, and so they could hardly survive.

20
Q

Why were the colonists angry with Governor Berkeley?

A

He didn’t give them protection from Indians

21
Q

Compare being a slave to being an indentured servant.

A

Slaves never got to leave work, but indentured servants got to leave after the allotted time had passed. Also, the slaves never wanted to or agreed to work, but the indentured servants actually agreed to work.

22
Q

Why did slavery grow an importance in Virginia?

A

Life was getting better in England, so fewer people came over to the new world, so there are a fewer indentured servants. The plantation owners didn’t want to do the hard work of growing tobacco, so they needed workers for that. They also wanted cheap workers so that they could keep all the money for themselves.

23
Q

How did slave owners try to keep enslaved Africans from revolting?

A

They restricted them and their rights. For example, first they used to be able to buy their freedom, but later they restricted their freedoms and they couldn’t buy their freedom. Also in South Carolina, some slaves ran away to Florida, but there they got punished for what they had done so as to motivate future other slaves to never think of doing that.

24
Q

Where was the largest slave uprising?

A

South Carolina

25
Q

If good land was taken, where would the settlers go?

A

To the frontier

26
Q

Why did settlers want to own land?

A

To vote they needed land and they wanted to vote
also land is how you grow crops and also that’s how you make money and live

27
Q

How did the settlers wanting land affect the Indians?

A

The sellers wanted to take Indians land but the Indians already had the land and they were living on it, so the sellers killed the Indians come and though the Indians retaliated there were still driven off their land.

28
Q

How important is it to work together? Do we need it to survive?

A

We do need to work together, because when the settlers didn’t work, they nearly died.
MODERN EXAMPLE OF WORKING TOGETHER:
