What happens if blood is donated to someone who does not have that type of marker or antigen?
The body will think the new blood is a foreign invader or antigen. Antibodies will be produced against them and the blood will agglutinate or clump.
What is the Rh factor?
Rh factor is an inherited antigen. 85% of Canadians are Rh+. 15% of Canadians are Rh-
Can Rh- people donate to Rh+?
Yes, Rh- people may donate to Rh+ but not the other way.
What is Erythroblastosis fetalis?
Erythroblastosis fetalis is a condition when an Rh- mother has an Rh+ baby. The antibodies from the mother against Rh+ blood can enter the Rh+ blood of the fetus causing agglutination.
When does Erythroblastosis fetalis occur?
Erythroblastosis fetalis occur only after the first child is born, and only if the first baby inherited Rh+ blood from the father.
What is artificial blood capable of carrying?
This blood can carry O2 and CO2. It cannot transport viruses or diseases.
Is artificial blood a long-term solution?
No, artificial blood is only good for a quick fix. It does not have clotting agents or an immune response.
What is the first line of defense in the immune response?
The first line of defense is physical. Skin provides a protective barrier. Respiratory passage foreign debris in mucous and moves it away by cilia. Stomach is highly acidic to destroy invading substances.
What is the second response in the immune system?
The second response is the immune system. Some white blood cells called phagocytes seek out and destroy invaders by phagocytosis. Other white blood cells called lymphocytes produce antibodies against foreign invaders.
What are T-cells?
T-cells are special lymphocytes produced in the bone marrow and stored in the thymus gland. T-cells function is to seek out invaders and signal the attack to the B-cells.
