Circulation, Blood And Immunity Page One Flashcards
(5 cards)
Importance of the Circulatory System
- Circulates blood to deliver oxygen
- nutrients to tissues
- remove waste products
Example sentence: The circulatory system is essential for maintaining the health of all organs in the body.
Functions of the Circulatory System
a) Transport nutrients to cells
b) Removes waste like CO2
c) Transports chemical messengers like hormones
d) Distributes heat throughout the body
e) Maintains level of body fluid
f) Transports O2
g) Defends against invading organisms
Additional information: The circulatory system plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis within the body.
Every cell’s proximity to a blood vessel
Every cell is within a 2 cell distance from a blood vessel
Early Theories
Early Theories on the Circulatory System
- The Greeks believed the heart was the center of intelligence.
- Galen, a Roman physician, didn’t believe in blood circulation
- William Harvey proposed the theory of blood circulation in the 1600s
Historical perspective on the understanding of the circulatory system
Blood Vessels - Arteries
a. Arteries are high pressure vessels that carry blood away from the heart
b. Composed of 3 layers, outer and inner layers of connective tissue, middle layer is muscle and elastic connective tissue
c. A pulse is caused by the increase in the diameter of the arteries following heart contraction
d. An aneurysm is the ballooning of an artery caused by pressure of blood flowing through a weakened area
e. Blood moves from artery –> arteriole –> capillary which are progressively smaller
f. The diameter of the arterioles are controlled by nerves
g. Tiny sphincter muscles control movement of blood into capillaries
Anatomy and function of arteries
