Chapter 12 Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is a prototype?
A manifestation of a design that allows stakeholders to interact with it.
List some examples of prototypes in interaction design.
Screen sketches.
A storyboard, for example, a cartoon-like series of scenes.
A PowerPoint slide show.
A video simulating the use of a system.
A lump of wood (PalmPilot).
A cardboard mock-up.
A piece of software with limited functionality.
List the purpose of a prototype.
Ideas can be tested out.
Prototyping encourages reflection.
Stakeholders can see, hold, and interact with a
prototype.
What does low fidelity entail?
Using quick and cheap mediums like cardboard and paper.
Examples:
Sketches of screens, task sequences
‘Post-it’ notes
Storyboards
‘Wizard-of-Oz’
What does high fidelity entail?
Using materials that you would expect to be in the final
product. (software-based)
List the 2 types of compromising in prototyping.
Horizontal: More functions, less details.
Vertical: Less functions, more details.
What does conceptual design entail?
Developing an outline of what users can do and what concepts are needed to understand the product.
List the 3 steps to choosing interphase metaphors. UIG
Understand functionality
Identify potential problem areas
Generate metaphors
What does concrete design entail?
Emphasis on design details, for example, layout or navigation.
What does physical computing entail?
Building and coding prototypes using electronics for use by a wide range of people.
Toolkit includes:
Arduino
LilyPad
Senseboard
List the 3 approaches to developing an initial conceptual
model.
Interphase metaphors.
Interaction styles.
Interface styles.
What are Software Development Kits?
Programming tools and components to develop a
specific platform, for example, iOS.
