Chapter 12 Flashcards
(21 cards)
What are components of a vector?
. Horizontal and vertical.
What is another component form?
. i and j form (base/component vectors).
What is the modulus of a vector?
. The length - pythagoras.
What is the direction of a vector?
.Angle made with positive horizontal direction.
What do you call a vector with zero magnitude?
.The zero vector.
Define unit vector.
. Vector with magnitude one.
Define resultant vector.
Sum of 2 vectors - add component.
How do you subtract vectors?
Add the negative of one of the vectors.
What does scalar multiplication do?
Change magnitude but not direction unless negative. b = ta if parallel
What is a displacement vector?
A vector showing how to get from A to B.
What if one displacement vector is followed by another?
Add them.
What if you multiply a displacement vector by a scalar?
Same direction different magnitude.
What if you make a displacement vector negative?
Same magnitude opposite direction.
What do you call the vector connecting a point to the origin?
Position vector.
If A and B have pv a and b then what is AB?
b-a.
If A and B have pv a and b then what is the distance between them - AB?
Mod b-a - equal to magnitude.
If AB = DC what shape if ABCD?
Parallelogram.
If AB = CD and mod AB = BC then what shape is ABCD?
Rhombus.
If AB and BC are parallel and BC = tAB then what is t?
Ratio of the lengths.
Define collinear.
Points lying on a straight line.
What is the position vector of the midpoint of a and b?
1/2(a+b)
