Non-biological parent and confidential information regarding a child
A biological parent or family member, the only solution is to have the biological parent sign a form allowing the information to be given to be given to the individual
Paradoxical directives or interventions
A controversial technique that is defined as if authorities instruct persons to do things that are against their best interests, they will defy the counselor and correct the behavior on their own
Privileged communication in relation to family and group counseling
A) Usually is waived when there are more than one person is present B) Counselors can encourage confidentality but make it clear that it’s only on their part C) Clients should be informed of privacy, privileged communication, and confidentality in the first session
Married couples and divorce
A) Custody is a court order that defines the nature and responsibilities of two parents who are separated or divorced B) This can be a difficult process because the parents may have different parenting styles C) If their are children involved, the counselor should advocate on their behalf but also be aware of their own emotions regarding the situation
Confidentiality and group counseling
A) Define the limits of confidentality B) Stress the importance of confidentiality before the group begins and at various times during the group C) Set a norm of confidentiality D) Provide examples to members of how confidentiality might be breached inadvertently E) Inform members about the potential of consequences of intentionally breaching confidentiality F) In school counseling, counselors should send a informed consent form to make sure that it’s okay for the child to participate
Selecting group members

A) Becomes more complicated with families B) Counselors must know that obtaining informed consent from all parties is impossible C) The counselor must ensure that counseling is given freely after free and clear and sufficient information has been provided
Informed consent and group counseling
A) Potential members have the same rights as those entering individual counseling B) Clients in a group setting have less freedom to determine the topics and process of counseling as do people in individual counseling

The AAMFT outlines specific guidelines which include academic training, supervised experience in working with couples and families, work in one’s own family or origin, and personal therapy
Group counseling and members who want to drop out
A) Freedom to leave any time B) Counselors should be aware that this can happen C) If members feel like like they have done or said something for that specific member to leave, it will impact the cohesion and trust of the group
