they go NEXT to what they describe.

A “Misplaced Modifier Error” is…
A
one that fails to go next to what it modifies.

A “Dangling Modifier Error” begins…
A
a sentence – probably a Gerund Phrase, maybe a Descriptive Phrase – and is followed by a comma. What it modifies SHOULD go after the comma, but it doesn’t, hence breaking the rule that a modifier must go next to what it modifies.
