Rodents
Abscess
A pocket of pus that accumulates in response to an infection.
Barbering
When a guinea pig or rabbit chews on its own hair or that of a cagemate.
Boar
A male guinea pig, chinchilla, or hedgehog.
Buck
A male rabbit, hamster, gerbil, mouse, rat, or sugar glider.
Cavy
A common name for guinea pigs.
Cuy
Guinea pigs that are bred for food.
Doe
A female rabbit, hamster, gerbil, mouse, rat, or sugar glider.
Fluffle
A group of wild rabbits.
Fly-back fur
Fur that quickly falls back into its normal place when a hand is run backwards over the hair.
Four-class breeds
Smaller rabbit breeds that mature quickly and have a mature weight of less than 9 lb (4 kg).
Guard hair
The long, coarse hairs of a rabbit that form a protective coating over the undercoat.
Heatstroke
A life-threatening state that occurs when an animal’s body core temperature rises above normal from prolonged exposure to high temperature.
Herd
A group of guinea pigs. Also called a muddle, A group of chinchillas. A group of salamaders. Also called a congress.
Kindle
The birthing process of a rabbit.
Kit
A young rabbit. Also called a kitten. Chinchilla young. A young ferret.
Kitten
A feline less than one year of age. A young rabbit. Also called a kit.
Malocclusion
A misalignment of teeth and/or jaw.
Muddle
A group of guinea pigs. Also called a herd.
Pododermatitis
A bacterial disease that causes guinea pig and rabbit footpads to become sore, inflamed, and overgrown. It is caused by an infection of Staphylococcus bacteria that enters the foot. Also called bumblefoots.
Pubic symphysis
A cartilaginous joint that stiffens as the female guinea pig reaches the adult age. This prevents the young from being birthed through the pelvis if the female has not had a prior pregnancy.
Pup
Young guinea pig. Young of hamsters, gerbils, mice, and rats.
Rex fur
A rabbit’s short, dense fur where the guard hairs, hair, and undercoat are all the same length.
Roll-back fur
A rabbit’s fur that stays in position or very slowly rolls back into place when you run your hand backward over it.
Rosette
Radially growing swirls or cowlicks of hair on a guinea pig.
