Sugar Gliders
Aflatoxicosis
A type of poisoning illness that is caused by the ingestion of fungal toxins (Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus) that are found in certain feeds.
Bifurcated
Two-pronged or divided into two branches.
Bilobed
Having or consisting of two lobes.
Buck
A male sugar glider, rabbit, hamster, gerbil, mouse, or rat.
Carpus
The wrist bone
Cataract
The clouding of an eye’s lens or the surrounding membranes.
Colony
A group of sugar gliders. A group of mice. Also called a nest.
Conjunctivitis
An inflammation of the tissues surrounding the eye.
Convergent evolution
The process in which organisms that are not closely related independently evolve similar traits to adapt to similar environments.
Crabbing
A sound made by sugar gliders that sounds like a small worn electric motor. The sound is used when the sugar glider is disturbed or annoyed.
Dehydration
A condition that occurs when a being loses an excessive amount of fluids or fails to take in a sufficient amount of fluids.
Doe
A female sugar glider, rabbit, hamster, gerbil, mouse, or rat.
Enteritis
An inflammation of the small intestines.
Glider mill
A sugar glider breeding operation that breeds strictly for maximum profit and disregards breeding lines and health problems caused by inbreeding.
Gut-loading
Feeding a high-quality diet to organisms that will be fed to another animal.
Hypocalcemia
An abnormally low level of calcium in the blood that is generally caused by nutrient imbalances of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D.
Hypothermic
When a body temperature is lower than normal.
Jill
A female sugar glider or ferret.
Joey
A young sugar glider.
Lumpy jaw
A condition that occurs when the bacteria Actinomyes isrealii infects the face and neck of an animal. It creates hard lumps that continue to grow on the face and jaw and may affect the digestive tract and lungs.
Marsupial
A mammal that births immature young that usually live in a pouch on the female’s abdomen (e.g. sugar gliders).
Marsupium
A female marsupial’s pouch in which she carries her young (e.g. sugar gliders).
Metabolic bone disease
A disease common of sugar gliders. A disease caused by a mineral imbalance of calcium and phosphorus, which results in a softening of the bones. Also called a metabolic bone disease. Also called secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism.
Opposable thumb
A digit that can be placed against one or more of the remaining digits of a hand or foot (e.g. sugar gliders).
