Chapter 16 Flashcards
(25 cards)
What are two methods for installing an operating system?
Attended or unattended p. 749
Describe an attended installation.
You walk through the installation manually and answer the questions as prompted. p. 749
Describe unattened installation.
AN installation with little to no human involvement. p. 749
What are some methods offered by Xp to perform an unattended installation?
Remote Installation Service (RIS)
WIndows Deployment Services (WDS)
System preparation tool (Sysprep) p. 749
How does System Preparation tool work?
SYSPREP.EXE is used to prepare a preconigureed WIndows XP worksation so that an image can be made from it using third party software. The image can tehn be deployed to other client computers trough the use of third party software. p. 750
What are 4 installation types?
Typical
Full
Minimal
Custom. p. 750
What is a minimal installation?
Insalls only those componets needed to get the software funcitonal. p. 750
What is a typical installation?
The most common type of software components used but not all the components. p. 750
What is a custom installation?
Allows you to choose exactly which componens are installed. p. 750
What is a full installation?
Intalls every last component even those that may not be required or used frequently. p. 750
What is a dual boot configuaration?
Yo uinstall two OSs on the same computer. At boot time you have the option of selecting which OS you want to use. p. 751
What is an answer file?
In an unattended installation an answer file is supplied with all the correct parameters so no one needs to tell the computer. p. 752
True or False: if you do an unattended install you cannot upgrade with Windows XP.
False p. 752
True or False: if you do Bootable media install you cannot upgrade with Windows XP.
True (expect for scenarios involving legacy operating systems)
True or False: if you do an Sysrep install you cannot upgrade with Windows XP.
True
True or False: if you do an Remote install you cannot upgrade with Windows XP.
True
How does the Sysrep intallation method work?
The sysrep utility works by making an exact image or replica of an operating system installation called the master computer which can then be installed on other comuters. You still need a third party clonin gutility to copy the imae and deploy it to other computers. p. 753
What is an advantage to integrating Sysprep usage into the image capturing process?
A systprepped image will run plug and play when deployed and it will discover devices and install any drivers automatically. p. 753
What are some other services available that are similar to Sysprep?
Disk imaging or drive imaging. p. 753
Describe remote install/Windows deployment services.
It allows you to perfom several network installations at one time. A network installation is handy when you have many installs to perform and installing by CD is too much work. The installation CD is copied to a shared location on the network. Individual workstations boot and access the network share to execute the installations. The workstations can boot through a boot disk or built in network boot device known as boot ROM. p. 754
What are some t hings you do to prepare the hard drive?
partitioning
Formatting. p. 754
Define partitioning.
Establishing large allocations of hard drive space to create logical disks. Its a continuous section of sectors that are next to each other. p. 755
What are the phases of installing Windows XP?
Installation
Text Based
Graphical installation phase. p. 756
What are some postinstallation routines?
Updating drivers
Restoring user data files
verifying installatin. p. 759
