Chapter 9 Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is a netbook?
An extremely small laptop good for accessing the internet. p. 397
What are some differences between laptops and desktops?
portability, cost, performance, expandability. The components of a laptop are integrated into a motherboard. With a desktop you have an option to integrate components like your IEEE1394, video, expansion, and network ports, USB, parallel. The motherboard in laptops is propriatary and therefore there are no standards so you cant build one. p.397-400
Define daughterboard.
A thin circuit board for laptops with the video circuitry (possibly others as well). p.400
True or false: In most cases you can upgrade the processor of a laptop.
False: Laptop processors are usually soldered to the bothrboard. The processor usually cant be removed and therefore no upgrades are possible. p.400
What are two common types of laptop memory packages?
SODIMM and MicroDIMM.p.402
What are some configuarations of the RAM form factors the SODIMMS are available in?
72 pin and 144 pin SDRAM, 200-pin DDR (1GB), 200 pin DDR2 and 204 pin DDR3. (8 GB) p. 402
What is a PC card?
A universal expansion bus that fits laptops. p. 411
What are some differences between Express Card and Card Bus?
Express card is made to accomodate PCIe and USB 2.0. Express card is capable of transferring dta at 2.5Gbs. Express card supports faster versions of legacy technology such as Gigabit Ethernet, IEE 1394b and eSATA. p.412
What are the two voltages Express Cards run on?
3.3V and 1.5V. p.413
Compare a Mini PCIe card to an Express card.
The Mini PCIe card has a different 52-pin edge connector. They both support USB2.0 and PCIe x1 and both come in 1.5 and 3.3V. p. 414
Define docking port.
It is used to connect the laptop to a special laptop only peripheral. It is an extension of the motherboard f a laptop. It can contain things like a full sized drive bay and expansion bus slots and can funciton as a port replicator. p.415.
What is a port replicator?
In the docking port it reporcues the funcitons of the ports on the back of alaptop so that peripherals such as monitors, keyboards, printers, and so on that dont travel with the laptop can stay behind at the docking station. p. 415
True or False: Docking ports and docking stations can work with nearly all laptops that you can buy.
False. Docking ports and docking stattions are propriatary. p. 416
How can you increase the shared memory of a video card if you want to use video intensive applications such as gaming?
Shared memory is configued in the BIOS. Some BIOS will only allow you to set aside a certain amount of memory for video. p. 420
What does the inverter do in an LCD backlight?
It converts DC into AC for the backlight. p. 421
Where might you find the repair manual for a laptop?
On the manufactures website. p. 423
What should you have before you crack the case of a laptop?
An organization and documentation plan. p.425
What are the two most common components that are upgraded in a laptop?
Hard drives and memory. p. 427
What are some common mini PCIe devices?
SCSI controllers, SATA controllers, netwrork cards, sound cards and modems. p.429
True or false: You can upgrade your network card in your laptop.
True” There are external network cards. If your built in card is still working on a 802.11b and you want to upgrade to 802.11g or n you can buy a USB network card. WIndows should disable the old device but if not you can do it through the device manager. p. 430.
Describe how you flash the BIOS on a laptop.
You get a BIOS update from the naufacturere and burn it to a CD. Once you have the CD you boot the laptop from the CD and the disk will automatically flash the BIOS. p.436
What are some examples of non hot swappable devices?
Motherboard, internal IDE hard drives. p.437
How many pins does a Type 1 Mini PCI form factor have?
100
How many pins does a Type 2 Mini PCi form factor have?
100
