Define Application.
Software that is written to suplement the commands available to a particular OS. Each app is configured for the OS. p. 564
Define Driver.
Extremely specific software written for the purpose of instruciting a particular OS on how to access a piece of hardware. p. 564
Define Source.
The actual code that defines how a piece of software works. OS can be open source or closed source. p. 565
Define Shell
A program that runs on top of the OS and allows the user to issue commands through a set of menus or other interface. They make OS easier to use b changing hte user interface. p. 565
Define Graphical User Interface GUI
A method by which a person communicates with a computer using graphical images, icons, and methods other than text. p. 565.
Define Network.
Any group of computers that have a communication link between them. p. 565.
Define Cooperative Multitasking.
A multitaskng method that depends on the application itself to be resonsible for using the processor and then freeing it for acces by other applications. p. 565
Define Preemptive Multitasking.
A multitasking method in which the OS allots each application a certain amount of processor time and then forcibl takes back control and gives another application or task acces to the processor. So if an application crashes the OS takes control of the processor awa fromt he locked application. This is in modern systems. p. 565
Define Multithreading.
The ability of a single application to have multiple requests in the processor at one time. p. 565.
What is the windows compatability center?
a list of all hardware that works with windows. p. 567
What is the reccomended hardware specifications for the processor to run Windows XP?
300 MHZ or higher intel compatible processor. p. 567
What are some default programs on the Desktop of Windows?
Start menu, the Taskbar and a number of icons. p. 572
What is the system tray?
it is the icons to the right of the taskbar. It contains a clock by default. p.575
