Flashcards in Chapter 16-Ecology Deck (16):
1

What is ecology?

The study of how living things interact with each other and their environment.

2

What is a habitat?

The place where it lives.

3

Give 2 examples of a habitat.

A beach, a hedgerow, meadow, pond etc...

4

What is an ecosystem?

The habitat plus the community of organisms.

5

What is a food chain?

It is a feeding relationship between organisms through which energy is transferred.

6

Give an example of a food chain.

Grass➡️rabbit➡️fox➡️bacteria

7

What is a producer?

It makes its own food eg. Green plants

8

What is a consumer?

Cannot make their own food. Feed on organisms. Eg. Fox

9

What are the 3 types of consumer?

Herbivore, omnivore, carnivore.

What is a decomposer?

Breaks down dead material. Eg. Bacteria, fungi.

11

What is a food web?

A series of interconnecting food chains.

What is adaption?

When an organism has characteristics that make it well-suited to its environment.

13

Give one example of adaption.

A ladybird is brightly coloured to warn predators of its bitter taste.

14

What is competition?

When organisms struggle for the same resources in the habitat.

15

Give an example of competition.

Plants struggle for light, space and water in a habitat.

16

What is interdependence?

When two types of organisms need or rely on each other.
