Terms/definitions of microbes in the bloodstream
Bacterium- Bacteria in the blood
Viremia-Viruses in the blood
Fungemia- Fungi in the blood
Sepsis- Bacteria growing and multiplying int he blood
Endotoxic shock- Dangerous drop in blood pressure due to bacterial toxins
Malaria
Cause- Protazoa, spread by mosqito bites
Symptoms- Chills, fever, sweating and fatigue
Transmission- Mosqito vector
Prevention- bed nets, mosqito control and antimalarial meds
HIV/AIDS
Cause- HIV
Symtoms- Starts off like a flu illness but then the immune system weakens
Transmission- Sharing needles, blood, mother to baby and sexual contact
Lyme disease
Cause- Bacteria and spread by tick bites
Symptoms- fatigue, fever, bull’s eye rash, joint pain and nervous system issues
Transmission- Tick bites
Prevention- Avoid ticks, use insect repellent and check for ticks after outdoors
Mono
Cause-Epstein-barr virus
Symptoms- Sore throat, fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes and enlarged spleen
Transmission- Saliva, sharing drinks
Prevention- Avoid sharing drink with other infected people

HIV is chronic but a manageable condition with treatment.
- Focus on education, testing, reducing stigma and access to care
Lyme Disease public health information
Lyme disease is common in wooded areas
