(19 cards)
Define sedentary behavior
A total lack of exercise. Sitting time while at work or school, sitting in a car, sitting while watching TV, or sitting at a computer
Define health belief model
Model that stipulates that the likelihood of an individual engaging in preventative health behaviors (exercise) depends on the person’s perception of the severity of the potential illness as well as their appraisal of the costs and benefits of taking action
Define theory of planned behavior
An extension of the theory of reasoned action that suggests intentions are the best predictors of actual behavior
Define subjective norm
An individual’s attitude toward a particular behavior and what is normative regarding the behavior
Define social cognitive theory
Personal, behavioral, and environmental factors operate as reciprocally interacting determinants of each other
Define self determination theory
People are inherently motivated to feel connected to others in a social milieu (relatedness), to function effectively in that milieu (effectance), and to feel a sense of personal initiative in doing so (autonomy)
Define transtheoretical model
Model stating that people progress through stages of change and that movement across the stages is cyclic rather than linear because many people fail in their efforts to establish and maintain lifestyle changes
Define physical activity maintenance model
Model that predicts the maintenance of physical activity by considering goal setting, self motivation, self efficacy, the physical activity environment, and life stress
Define ecological model
Model that explains how environments and behaviors affect each other, taking into consideration intrapersonal (biological), interpersonal (family), institutional (schools), and policy (laws at all levels) influences
Define self monitoring
Tracking one’s own progress
Define motivational interviewing
A collaborative, person centered form of guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation for change
Define prompt
A cue that initiates a behavior
Define fading
The gradual elimination of a prompt
Define association
When the focus is on international body feedback (how the muscles feel, breathing)
Define dissociation
When the focus is on the external environment (how pretty the scenery is)
Define decision balance sheet
Technique that involves writing down the anticipated consequences of exercise participation in terms of gains to self, losses to self, gains to important others, losses to important others, the approval of others, the disapproval of others, self approval, and self disapproval
What have been some of the main reasons that people have stated they do not exercise?
Health issues, inconvenience, lack of motivation or energy, lack of social support, insufficient time, and lack of money
What is the most frequently given reason for inativity?
Lack of time
