Chapter 2 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is matter ?
Anything that occupies space and has mass
What are the 3 physical states of matter?
Solid , liquid, gas
What are the most common elements found in humans?
- Oxygen 65%
- Carbon 18%
- Hydrogen 10%
- Nitrogen 3%
Are trace elements important ?
Yes, because they are often used as catalysts in enzyme systems.
What is the difference between Organic and inorganic compounds ?
Organic compounds always contain carbon and hydrogen. Inorganic compounds only contain carbon
What are subatomic particles of an ATOM?
Protons, neutrons and electrons
Radioactive Isotopes
Good : They are used in radiography
Bad : they can cause illness and death
What does the Bohr Odell say about the electron shell ?
Electrons first occupy the shell that is closest to nucleus with lowest energy
What do the electrons determine ?
Number of protons inside the nucleus
What are 3 type of chemical bonds
- Covalent bonds
- Non Polar convalent bonds
- Hydrogen bonds
What’s the difference between an acid and a base?
An acid produces hydrogen ions
A base accepts hydrogen ions
