Among the various duties of a veterinary assistant, you must also help in the pharmacy:
- Fill prescriptions
- Dispense medications
- Keep records in the pharmacy

Prescription
A prescription is the written medication order by doctor to:
- Patient
- Pharmacist
- Other veterinarian
- for the supply of a medicine, dressing or surgical appliance to a patient.

- Veterinary assistants should be able to read and understand the written prescription.
- Understanding of pharmacy abbreviations is key to properly filling a prescription.
Parts of prescription:
- The prescription contains following information.

- Head: superscription.
- Body: Inscription, subscriptions, signature
- Tail
Superscription: (head)
- name, professional degree, contact number, address of prescriber, date when order is written.
- patients name, age, sex, address
- The symbol Rx
Inscription- Body:
The name and quantities of the medicament to be supplied
Inscription- Body:
- The medicament may be prescribed as:
بتعلق اذا الدواء جاهز a اذا لا b
- (a): A proprietary product, together with quantity required.
- (b): A special formula-in which case the quantity of each ingredient will be stated together with a description of the type of preparation, e.g. mixture, lotion and tablets.
Subscription - Body
- ما بتكون موجودة اذا الدواء كان جاهز
- It is instructions for the Pharmacist.
- It may include instruction regarding the flavor of the product, label, and quantity to be dispensed.
- Major part of prescriptions.
Signature - body:
- Instruction for the patient. These may include:
- Direction of use:
- The method of administration
- The dose of drug
- The time of administration
- The diluents if relevant of application
- The part of body where the preparation is to be applied
Tail - include:

The Prescriber’s Name, Address and signature
Abbreviations:
- BID = q12h = twice a day , every 12 hours.
- 1X3 d - 1 dose, three time a day.
- TID - three time daily
- QID - four timed daily
QOD - every other day = q48h
PO - by mouth
Source of errors in prescription:
- Handwritten prescription is very difficult to read.
- Very bad spelling mistakes.
- Lack of experience.
- Calculating dosage
