Chapter 2 Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are ribosomes?
Involved in the synthesis of protein by adding amino acids together. This process is called protein synthesis
What is a cell wall?
It provides structural strength and support for a cell
WHat is a nucleus
It stores DNA in it, and controls the center of the cell. It is also used in cell growth and division
What is a cell membrane?
Protects the cell. It is a membrane that acts as a semi-permeable barrier between the intracellular and extracellular environment
What is a rough endoplasmic reticulum
involved in the synthesis and modification of proetins
What is a vacuole?
Used to store food for the cell. And store waste so that the waste doesn’t contaminate the rest of the cell
What is a golgi apparatus?
Processes proteins received from the ER
What are lysosomes?
Breaks down proteins for the cell to use
What is cytoplasm?
Holds the components of a cell together. ALso transports things around the cell
What is a vesicle?
Storage of substances and transports substances in and out of the cell
What are prokaryotic cells?
- No membrane bound organelle, no nucleus, unicellular, site or binary fission, circular DNA
What are eukaryotic cells?
has a nucleus, membrane-bound organelles, reproduce via mitosis, multicellular, and linear DNA
What is the mitochondria?
Site of aerobic respiration. It converts glucose into energy
What is the Smooth ER?
Involved in the synthesis of lipids
SA:V?
The greater the surface area the smaller the volume, the faster in the exchange of materials
Why are cells small?
To ensure sufficient exchange of nutrients for cellular repair, growth and reproduction
