Stuarts
Ruling family of Scotland. The English throne was passed to them when Elizabeth I died

Henry the 8th and his daughter, Elizabeth were the rulers. Recognized the value of good relations with parliament
James I
A well-meaning ruler and scholar. He supervised the translated version of the bible called the King James Version. Beloved kings were like gods
Charles I
James I son who inherited the throne after James and varied on his fathers beliefs bout kings being like gods
Parliament
The people who kept Charles in line until Charles dissolved it
Puritans
Were persecuted by William Laud because they would not accept Anglican practices. They were a group of English Protestants
The Long Parliament
Eventually led a revolution against the monarchy. The parliament that came back after Charles dissolved the first one
Roundheads
Supporters of parliament. Cut there hair short for anti-long hair
Cromwell
A strong minded puritan officer. Recognized the parliaments army as the new model army that defeated the cavaliers
Cavaliers
Fought for Charles I and were defeated by the new model army
Common wealth
Known as the English republic led by Cromwell
Restoration
When the monarchy was restored by Charles II
Charles II
Son of Charles I who was called to rule England after Cromwells death
Habeas Corpus
The Tories used this to defeat the exclusion act. It protects citizens from arbitrary arrest
James II
Inherited the throne in 1685 and was determined to grant tolerance for Catholics
Glorious Revolution
Was the overthrow of James II by a union of English parliamentarians
Prince William and Mary of Orange
The daughter of James II and her husband who took the throne of England after James II
