Chapter 2 Flashcards
Atom
Basic unit of matter
Nucleus
Center of an atom made up of electrons and neutrons
Electron
Negatively charged particle
Element
Consists of only one type of atom
Isotopes
Atoms in an element with different amounts of neutrons in them
Compound
Substances chemically produced with two or more elements
Ionic bond
When one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another
Ion
Positively and negatively charged atoms
Covalent bond
When moving electrons travel within the nuclei of two atoms
Molecule
Smallest unit of most compounds
Van deer Waals forces
Oppositely charged molecules will attract
Hydrogen bond
When a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge attracts another atom with a partial negative charge
Cohesion
The attraction of molecules with the same substance
Adhesion
The attraction between molecules of different substances
Mixture
Material made of two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed but not chemically combined
Solution
Type of mixture where all components are evenly distributed
Solute
A substance being dissolved
Solvent
A substance dissolving the solute
pH Scale
Measurement system used to indicate H+ ions in a solution
Acid
Any compound that creates H+ ions in a solution
Base
A compound that creates hydroxide ions in a solution
Buffers
Weak bases or acids that react with strong bases or acids to prevent a sudden change in pH
Monomers
Smaller units of compounds, to form polymers
Polymer
Compound made up of monomers
