Chapter 2- Inside The Brain Flashcards
What does the medulla do?
Controls life sustaining functions
Left and right crossed over so info from left goes to right brain
The pons?
Bridge between upper and lower section of the brain
Coordinates movement of left and right side
Sleep, dreaming, and arousal
What does the Reticular Formation do?
Network of neurons running through medulla, pons, and beyond
Allows people to ignore constant unchanging info and stay alert
What does the cerebellum do?
Controls rapid involuntary and voluntary movements
3 sections of the brain?
Forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain
Parts of hindbrain
Cerebellum, reticular formation, pons, medulla
What does the limbic system do?
Emotions, motivations, memory, and learning
Thalamus
Processes sensory info before sending it to the right part of the cortex
Hypothalamus
Regulates body temp, thirst, hunter, etc
Controls pituitary
Amygdala
Fear and memory of fear
Info goes here before anywhere else
Cingulate cortex
Inside cortex, processes emotions, cognitive reasoning, automatic info
What are the parts of the limbic system?
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Hippocampus
Amygdala
Hippocampus
Long term memories
What is the cortex?
Outer part of the brain, left and right sides (that control opposite sides of the body)
Parts of the cortex
Occipital loves
Parietal lobes
Temporal lobes
Frontal lobes
Temporal lobes
Auditory cortex and association
Amygdala + hippocampus (learning and memory)
Frontal lobes
Higher mental functions, controls voluntary muscles
Occipital lobes
Process visual info and visual association
Parietal lobes
Process info from skin and internal receptors
Broca’s area
Left frontal lobe, devoted to speech
Wernicke’s area
Left temporal lobe, Understanding meaning of words
Corpus Callosum
Allows communication between both sides of brain
