Chapter 21 - Imitation, Modeling, and Observational Learning Flashcards
generalized imitation
A term often used when a learning imitates a wide variety of unprompted, untrained, non-reinforced modeled behaviors in different settings and situations. Generalized imitation could be considered a higher order response class in which participants imitate novel models without training and that are not predictive of reinforcement.
imitation
Behavior that (a) is occasioned by another person’s model of the behavior (or symbolic representation thereof), (b) has formal similarity with the model, (c) follows the model behavior closely in time, and (d) the model is the primary controlling variable for the imitative behavior. An imitative behavior is a new behavior emitted following a novel antecedent event (i.e. the model).
imitation training
A systematic, research-based set of procedures for teaching a nonimitative learner to imitate models of novel behaviors.
modeling
A behavior change strategy in which learners acquire new skills by imitating demonstrations of the skills by live or symbolic models. The model shows, demosntrates, or conveys exactly the beahvior or the learner is expected to perform. Models can be live demonstrations or symbolic representations of the desired behavior.
video modeling
A behavior change strategy in which the participant views a video of a model performing the target behavior then imitates the behavior.
video self-modeling
A behavior change strategy in which the participant views a video of himself successfully performing the target behavior and then imitates his own model.
