Flashcards in Chapter 22 Deck (16):
Who was the founder of taxonomy?
What did linnaeus do?
Developed the format for naming species.
What is strata?
Layers of sedimentary rock.
What is paleontology?
Study of fossils.
What is natural selection?
The unequal success of reproduction of certain species.
What are the three broad observations that Darwin explained?
The unity of life, the diversity of life, and the match of between organisms and their environment.
What is descent with modification?
It summarized the perception of the unity of life. That all organisms are related through descent.
What are the five kingdoms?
Platae, Protista, Animalia, fungi, and Monera.
What is artificial selection?
Something that humans have created to inhabit individuals with the most desired traits
What were Darwin's two observations and two inferences
-Populations vary in inherited traits
-Species can produce more offspring than the environment can support many of those will not reproduce and survive
*the individuals with the most suitable traits lived to pass on those traits
*this leads to favorable traits through the population
What is homology?
What are Vestigial structures?
Pieces of parts of the body that used to be very useful but aren't currently(the appendix)
What is convergent evolution?
Evolution of similar features in distantly related groups.
What is biogeography?
The geographic distribution of species which provides evidence of evolution.
What is Pangea?
What it was called when all continents were connected.
