A

established plan for governing territory northwest of Ohio River and west of PA

conditions of self government and statehood, Bill of Rights

outlined process for new states to be admitted

denied slavery any area above North of Ohio River

purpose: admitting new states to the Union

southwest territory

A

North Carolina had all land turned over to fed govt

should be governed under northwest ordinances

but fed govt had to agree to respect North Carolinas veteran land grants –> incentive to get them to fight in the war

fed govt sold southwest territory to make money off of it to ratify as state

other states also sold land to fed govt to become a state

allowed settlers from NC to move west to TN

territory was south of Ohio River

slavery permitted

why is 1796 important year

A

census between Wattagans and Cumberlands brought together by William Blunt

eventually 5,000 for census combined 35,000 –> 77,000

new state proposal

this is when TN submitted their Const to Congress

presidential election with George Washington taking place same year - concerns admitting TN would tip balance of votes

John Sevier picked to be 1st governor

made Knoxville cap

important notes about TN Constitution

A

Bicameral legislature

no executive veto

governor could have 3 terms, 2 yrs each

voting requirements (21yrs old, allowed free blacks)

MS River rights! - Cumberlands traded down to Natachez and came back on Natchaez trial

A

tried to bring together the Wattaga settlements and Cumberland settlements (was appointed by Washington to shepard the territory

renamed territorial capital - Knoxville

eventually let John Sevier take over because Blount wanted to be US Senator

treaty of holston (1791)

A

William Blount met with Cherokees in attempt to revise Treaty of Hopewell

met on Holston river

legitmized the white settlments below the French board, for it to set new boundaries

Blount wanted land south of Muscle Shoals - Cherokee denied

Cherokee tribes fell under protection of US (US managing all future foreign affairs)

A

area west of TN river parts of Perry, Lewis, Maury, Giles, Lawrenece, Wayne, Hardin Co.

specified land under the Land Compact of 1806 - giving fed gov exclusive rights to this land - not TN or NC

but in 1818 Congress agreed open these portions - Chickasaw surrendered all rights to West TN
