Chapter 3 Flashcards
Acid
A compound that releases hydrogen ions when dissolved in water or donates H+ to another substance
Base
A substance that is capable of neutralizing an acid in a chemical reaction. forming water; a substance that accepts an H+ from another substance
Binary Compound
A compound containing Atoms or ions of two elements
Electrolyte
A substance that dissociates or ionizes into aqueous ions upon dissolving and conducts electricity when dissolved in water
Formula Unit
The smallest repeating unit in an ionic compound
Ionic Compound
A compound consisting of Cations and Anions in proportions that give electrical neutrality
Molecular Compound
A compound composed of two or more nonmetals and existing in discrete units of atoms held together in a molecule; electrons are shared between atoms rather than transferred from one atom to another
Molecular Formula
A formula that indicates the actual number of atoms present in a molecule
Mon-atomic Ion
An ion of a single atom
Nonelectolyte
A substance that retains its molecular identity upon dissolving and does not conduct electricity when dissolved in water
Oxoanion
An anion containing oxygen attached to some other element
Polyatomic Ion
An ion containing two or more atoms
Strong Electrolyte
A substance that dissociates or ionizes completely into ions upon dissolving and conducts electricity well
Weak Electrolyte
A substance that dissociates or ionizes partially into ions upon dissolving and conducts electricity to a slight extent
Non Electrolyte
Does not dissolve into ions, does not conduct electricity
Binary Covalent Compounds
are pure substances that consist of two nonmetallic elements
Non Polar Covalent Bonds
Are formed between two of the same non metals and they share paired electrons equally
Polar Covalent Bonds
Are formed between two different non metals and they share paired electrons unequally
