Enterocytes
cells lining the wall of the intestine
Tissues
Grouping of like cells that performs a function (ex. muscle tissue)
Organ
Body structure composed of two or more tissues and performing a specific function (ex esophagus)
System
group of organs that work together performing a unique function (ex gastrointestinal)
Hormones
proteins or lipids–chemical messenger in bloodstream–regulate physiologic processes at sites distant from the glands that secrete them
Gastrointestinal tract (GI)
long, muscular tube–mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum
Sphincter
Tight ring of muscle seperating some organs of GI tract
Accessory organs of digestion
Salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, pancreas
Cephalic phase
earliest phase of digestion in which the brain things about and prepare for consumption of food
Saliva
water, mucus, enzymes which begin digestion of carbohydrates
Enzymes
small chemicals, usually proteins that speed up body processes, but not apparently changed during those processes.
Entric Nervous System
autonomic nerves in the walls of the GI tract
