What is the message?
- contains only information to be conveyed; does not have to be only written or spoken
- can be physical experessions (ex. facial expressions)
Who is responsible for the receiver properly understanding the message?
the sender
What may influence interpretation of sender’s message? (4)
- tone of voice/ facial expression
- body language
- mannerisms
- other nonverbal clues
What is the Medium?
the method used to convey the info from the sender to the receiver
How does medium influence importance of message?
posting note on bulletin board (not super important) vs. announcing message at roll call (important)
What is environmental noise?
physical/ sociological condition that interferes with message
What are examples of environmental noise? (3)
- physical noise- background sounds, conversations
- visual distractions
- distracted receiver (thinking about something else)
What are examples of sociological environmental noise? (2)
- prejudice

How to minimize sociological environmental noise? (8)
- do not struggle for power
- be firm and clear about important matters
- keep emotions in check
- be aware of tone of voice and work selection
- do not assume reeiver has understood message (encourage questions)
- seek feedback
- provide appropriate level of detail
- watch out for conflicting orders
What is the receiver’s responsibility?
to capture and interpret the information as intended by sender
What does feedback do?
completes the communication cycle by confirming receipt and verifying receiver’s interpretation of message
- receiver should repeat key points of sender’s message
How can active listening be achieved? (3)
- good eye contact
- alert body posture
- frequent use of verbal engagement
How can one improve listening skills? (5)
- don’t assume anything
- don’t interrupt
- try to understand the need
- look for real reason person wants your attention
- do not react too quickly
What are key points of emergency communications? (8)
- be direct
- speak clearly
- use normal tone of voice
- hold radio 2” (5cm) from mouth
- allow for delay after keying mic
- use plain English rather than “10codes”
- use common terminology
- avoid noisy environments

C- Conditions: smoke/ heat, obstacles, what is burning
A- Actions: primary search, finishing assigned objective
N- Needs: tools/ equipment, urgent assistance, ventilation
