Chapter 3: Networks and Clouds Flashcards
What are the 4 types of network?
1)Personal area network (PAN)
2)Local area network (LAN)
3)Wide area network (WAN)
4)Internet
What is a computer network?
Collection of computer that communicate with one another over transmission lines and wireless connections
What is a PAN?
Personal area network: devices connected around a single person
What is LAN?
Local area network: connected around a single site (small office/home)
What is WAN?
Wide area network: connection between multiple sites
What is the Internet?
A network of networks
What is Intranet?
Private internet used exclusively withink organization
What are the 3 wireless options?
1)Bluetooth
2)Wi-Fi
3)Cellular netwrok
What is Bluetooth?
Wireless communication method that transmit data over short distances
To what network is Wi-Fi connected to ?
Local area network (LAN)
What type of network does cellular network use
Wide area network (WAN) and radio signals
When you connect a LAN to the internet, you connect to an… ?
Internet service provider (ISP)
What is a digital subscriber line ?
DSL: same lines as voices telephones, but operates so that its signals do not interfere with voice telephone service
What is a protocol?
Set of rules used by 2 communicating services
What is the Ethernet?
IEEE 802.3 protocol for LAN connections
What are the 3 types of protocols?
1)TCP/IP protocol architecture
2)Hypertext transport protocol (HTTP)
3)IP (Internet protocol)
What is hypertext transport protocol?
Protocol used between browsers/web servers
What is the secure version of hypertext transport protocol?
Https
What is the Internet protocol?
Identifies and adress for every device connected to Internet (uniquely identifies location)
What is markup language?
system for annoting a document in a way distinguishable from text (+ common)
What is the Hypertext markup language (Html)?
Most common for layout of web pages, defines fonts/layouts of all elements on pages of website)
What does extensible markup language do?
Enables exchange of structured data over the web, machine readable
What does service oriented architecture provide? (SOA)
Way for apps on network to talk to each other, help move data along internet
What are the 2 general ways data moves?
1)Carriers
2)Internet of Things
