Chapter 4 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Molarity
amount of a chemical in a solution
Molarity Equation
M = moles of solute/ volume of solution in moles
Theoretical Yield
determining how much product can be made from a certain amount of reactants
How to Calculate Theoretical Yield
balance the chemical equation, identify the limiting reactant, then calculate the moles of product that would be produced if all of the limiting reactants reacted completely, and finally convert that amount to grams using the molar mass of the product
Percent Yield =
(actual yield/ theoretical yield) x100
Limiting Reagent
the reactant is completely consumed
Excess Reagent
reactant is not used up all the way
Stoichiometric Equivalence
on paper, it is possible to have multiple reactants completely consumed
Combustion Reaction
class of reaction where a substance reacts with oxygen to form an oxide and water
How to Balance a Combustion Reaction
carbon, then hydrogen, and lastly oxygen because it is a free element
