chapter 4 Flashcards
biological, sociocultural factors and environmental factors (17 cards)
biological factors
body weight
overweight and obesity
* higher mortality and lower life expectancy - heart attacks and stroke
* higher prevalence of cancers
* increased exclusion/discrimination → low self esteem (mental) → avoid social activities (social)
* sleep apnea → low energy (physical) → limit focus on activites → purpose is life lsot through work (spiritual)
biological factors
age
- increased incidence/prevalence of hearing loss, cataracts, osteoarthrities, CD etc.
- decreased fitness levels & aerobic capacity → reduced ability to preform activites (endurance)
- reduced bone density → factures
- chronic disease/conditions → reduced quality relationships and negative thought patterns
biological factos
blood pressure
the pressure of the blood in arteries
* high blood pressure → increased risk of Heart attack and stroke
* kidney failure
* unmanaged hypertentions → lack of energy and breathing difficulties → impact physical hwb
* reduced social interconnections - engage in hobbies
biolgical factors
blood cholesterol
- high intake of Low lipoprotein → narrowing of blood vessels → athlerosclerosis: heart disears → reduced space for blood to flow = higher work rate → coronary heart disease
- premature death
- heart pain
- gallstones → hgiher abdominal pain → reduced ability to perform daily tasks/ socialise etc.
biological factor
glucose regulation
glucose is the preffered soruce of fuel
* impaired glucose regualtion → damages blood vessels = issues is eyes, gums and feet = increases anxiety about condition
* impaired glucose regulation → glucose is extreted in the urine instead of being available to cells →low levels of energy → exercise and maitnain fitness
biological factors
birthweight
- low birthweight → developmental delays (cognitive/motor) → decrease logic and problem solving → decreased capacity for physical activity
- increase risk of high blood pressure, T2D, CD
- decreased ability to process emotions → behavioural problems
- disengagment from school → reduced sense of purpose
biological factor
genetics
the genetic blueprent determined in fertilisation. genetic predisposition - icnreases the risk of developing a condition
health status
* women can’t get prostate
* men cant get ovarian cancer
* women - higher prevalency of breast cancer
socioeconomic status
the social standing of an individual comparison to others in that society. It is based on education, income and occupation
sociocultural factors
socioeconomic status
- income → access to resources → maintains health/body weight → prevent diease
- low SES → high labourous trades → increase incidence of injuries
- low SES → poor education → low health literacy → poor management of preventable disease → more likely to smoke or alcohol
sociocultural factors
employment status
- higher rates of mortality/morbidity/suicide
- concerned about job security → elevated stress → sleep problems/depression
- loss of purpose
- financial stress → increase anxiety/depresion → feeling of worthlessness
sociocultural facotrs
social networks/social exclusion
- social networks → lower morbodity and mortality
- social exlusions → risk taking behaviours like drinking and smoking
- strong social networks → give support with issues → lower levles of emotional distress
- sense of beloning
environmental factors
the physical surroundings in which we live, work and play.
environmental factors
housing
- poor ventilation/hygiene = higher morbidity/mortality
- design safety - icnreases risk of falls, cuts, drowning etc.
- overcrowding = unsanitary conditions increases the risk of infectious diseases
- pollutants - tobacco
- poor sleeping conditions
- poor heating and cooling
environmental factors
work environment
- UV exposure - increases risk of cancer
- dangerous working conditions - icnreased risk of injuries
- exposure to hazardous substances
- increase anxiety
- injuries
