Chapter 4 Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are atoms?
The substances that make up all things
What is the nucleus?
A tight, dense bundle of protons and neutrons at the centre of each atom
What is the bulk of mass in an atom?
The nucleus
What are elements?
Substances that are made up of the same type of atoms, (i.e. the same number of protons in the nucleus)
What is a molecule
2 or more atoms
What is a compound?
2 or more types of atoms
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom (type of element)
What is the mass number?
The number of protons plus neutrons in the nucleus
What is an isotope?
Atoms that have the same number of protons (i.e. atomic number), but have different number of neutrons, giving them different mass numbers
What type of microscope can see atoms?
STM’s
What is indirect evidence?
Evidence that doesn’t directly prove a fact but allows for a reasonable conclusion about it
Are the number of electrons in an atom equal to the number of protons?
Yes
What are ions?
When there are more or less electrons
What happens if there are more or less protons?
The element itself will change
What is the electron cloud
The space that the electrons can be
What is the electron shell?
The path that the electron takes
What are the columns of the periodic table called?
Groups
What are the rows of the periodic table called?
Periods
