Chapter 8 Flashcards
(60 cards)
What is distance?
A measure of how far an object travels. It is a scalar quantity (expressed only as a size, with no direction)
What is displacement?
A measure of the difference between an object’s final position and initial position. It is a vector quantity (expressed as a size AND a direction)
What is speed?
A measure of the rate at which an object moves over a distance
How to calculate speed?
Speed = Distance/Time
What is instantaneous speed?
The speed at a particular point in time
What is average speed?
The overall speed over a long distance
What is acceleration?
The change in velocity over time
What is the unit for acceleration?
distance/time/time
What is instantaneous speed measured by?
A speedometer
How fast is acceleration due to gravtiy?
9.8m/s, then doubled every second
What is air resistance?
Thefriction between the air and a falling body
What is terminal velocity?
The final velocity
What is a force diagram?
It shows all the forces acting on an object, and their direction and magnitude
What is the unit for force?
Newtons (N)
What is Newton’s first law?
- An object will remain at rest or in uniform motion, unless acted upon by an external and unbalanced force.
- An object that is moving will continue to move unless acted on by an external force
What is inertia?
It the property of objects that makes them resist changes in their motion (Inertia basically defines Newton’s first law)
What is Newton’s second law
An object’s acceleration depends on the mass of the object and the size of the force applied
What is the formula for Newton’s seocnd law?
F = m x a
F = force (N)
m = mass (kg)
a =acceleration (m/s/s)
What is Newton’s third law?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
Does a larger or lighter object have more inertia?
Larger
What is an action force?
The force of a tennis ball accelerating forwards after it has been hit
What is a reaction force?
The force the ball has back on the racquet
How to convert km/h to m/s?
m/s x 3.6
What is reaction distance?
The distance you travel in a car before you can react to something
