Skill definition
A skill is a learned action to bring about the result you want with certainty and minimum effort
Ability definition
A persons sets of traits that control their potential to learn a skill
Basic Skill
Basic Skill- Quick to learn and doesn’t require any thought or decision making e.g. running
Complex Skill
Needs lots of decision making so requires a lot of thought and coordination e.g. overhead kick
Open Skill
Performed in a changing environment where a performer has to react and adapt to external factors
Closed Skill
Always performed in the same predictable environment and not affected by external factors.
Self Paced Skill
Controlled by the performer- they decide when and how quickly it’s done
Externally paced skill
Affected by external factors which control how quickly it’s done
Gross Skill
Powerful movements from large muscle groups e.g. long jump
Fine Skill
Smaller muscle groups to carry out precise movements that require accuracy and coordination e.g. archery
Performance Goal
Based on improving own personal performance e.g. new pb in 100m
Outcome goal
Focused on end result only e.g. Gold medal in 100m
What goal should beginners use
Performance goals because they are inexperienced and winning is unrealistic. Focusing on outcome may demotivate them
What does SMART stand for (Goal Setting)
Specific-Specific target
Measurable-Measure progress
Accepted-Decided by everyone involved
Realistic- Realistically met
TimeBound- Set a deadline
Basic Information Processing Model
Input- information from display (senses) selective attention
Decision Making- Selection of appropriate response from memory. Role of long term and short term memory
Output- Information sent to muscles to carry out response
Feedback- Received intrinsically or extrinsically
Verbal Guidance
Explanation in words how to perform technique
Advantages:
Helpful for elite performers
Give during performance
Combined with other guidance
Disadvantages:
Less useful for complex skills
Confusing for beginner
Visual Guidance
Visual clues to help you perform a technique. e.g. demonstrations or videos
Advantages:
Works well for beginners
Teach closed skills
Slow motion videos for small details
Disadvantages:
Less useful for complex and open skills
Demonstrations must be clear
Manual guidance
Assisted movement through technique
Advantages:
Useful for beginners
Good for complex skills
Disadvantages:
Reliance on guidance
Difficult for big groups
Mechanical Guidance
Guidance using sporting equipment
Advantages:
Useful for beginners
Helpful for complex skills

What was the outcome? Usually extrinsic. Useful for beginners to see if they achieved right results

You know how well you did a technique because of how it felt. Elite Performers
Extrinsic
Someone else tells you what happened and how to improve. Suited for beginners
