anxiety
a common emotion characterized by physical symptoms (faster heartbeat, feelings of tension) and thoughts or worries that something bad will happen.
central nervous system
main part of nervous system, includes brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
somatic (sensory and voluntary motor functions) and autonomous (involuntary movements)
sympathetic nervous system
activated by fear or stress. increases heard rate, breathing rate.
parasympathetic nervous system
calms down body after activation of sympathetic nervous system.
components of anxiety
anxiety comes out of the blue.
mind, body, behavior all affected. most common response is avoidance.
panic attack
an abrupt surge of intense fear or intense discomfort that reaches a peak within minutes and is accompanied by four or more physical symptoms.
worry
cognitive symptom of panic. apprehensive (negative) expectations about the future considered to be unreasonable in light of the actual situation. exists in adults, teens, some children.
