Puberty
Physical changes that lead to puberty

Psychological changes that occur during puberty- transition phase between childhood and adulthood

(for females) biological milestone of puberty; start of menstruation

Painful cramps in the abdomen and can include headache, nausea, dizziness (NOT PMS)
Premenstrual Syndrome
cyclical set of symptoms that may occur a few days before menstruation; headache, breast soreness, pain allergies and ance
Why is PMS controversial?
Not always accurate b/c periods are portrayed as a negative thing in media. Creates bias opinion
Cultural attitudes toward menstruation
Cultures have different actions taken when women has their first period. Some parents talk to and warn children but others don’t talk to their children. Menstruation is not talked much about and if brought up it is related to a negative experience.
Identity
her or his self-rating of personal characteristics in the physical, psychological and social dimension
Self-Esteem
measure of how much you like and value yourself. Overall regard
Female adolescent S-Esteem
Self esteem plummets due to changing body, weight and menarche.
Gender intensification
Girls and boys experience increased pressure to conform to culturally sanctioned gender roles during adolescents
Self-silencing
Not verbalizing exactly how you feel. Remaining quiet and let situation unfold
Body image/Physical attractiveness
since preschool we want to be cute little girls because they are praised
Female attractiveness
Exaggerated during adolescents; Women start looking at themselves as objects that can be judged by others. Beauty is most important
Feminist Identity
Women and men should be socially economically and legally equal. Complex view of themselves
Cultural Identity
idea and customs associated with social grouping such as country of origin, ethnic group and religion
White-as-Normative
Young European Americans are not concerned with their ethnic identity. White seen as standard and normative
Ethnic and Racial Identity
Multifaceted construct including: exploration resolution, centrality, ritual, regard and public regard
Positive Identity
Relates to well-being, academic achievement, and less risky health behaviors
Young women in classrooms experience
Targets of sexual comments, sexual bullying, feel invisible in the classroom
