Skeletal System

206 bones that make up the internal framework of the body
Supports the body, protects internal organs, point of attachment for skeletal muscles for body movement
Produces blood cells, and stores minerals
-primary structures are 1.) bones and 2.) joints

1

Bone marrow

Soft tissue found inside cavities in bones; produces blood cells

2

Bones

Type of connective tissue and organ of musculoskeletal system
Provide support for body and serve as sites of muscle attachments

3

Joints

Point at which two bones meet
Provides flexibility

4

Ligaments

Very strong bands of connective tissue that bind bones together at a joint

5

Cartilage

Strong, flexible connective tissue found in several locations in body, such as covering ends of bones in synovial joint, nasal septum, external ear, Eustachian tube, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and intervertebral discs

6

Osseous tissue

Bony tissue; one of the hardest tissues in body

7

Ossification

Process of bone formation

8

Osteoblasts

Embryonic bone cell
Immature bone cells

9

Osteocytes

Mature bone cells

10

Bone structure
ARTICULAR CARTILAGE

Layer of cartilage covering ends of bones forming synovial joint

11

Bone structure
CANCELLOUS BONE

Bony tissue found inside a bone
Contains cavities that hold red bone marrow
Also called spongy bone

12

Bone structure
COMPACT BONE

Hard exterior surface bone
Also called cortical bone

13

Bone structure
CORTICAL BONE

Hard exterior surface bone
Also called compact bone

14

Bone structure
DIAPHYSIS

Shaft portion of long bone

15

Bone structure
EPIPHYSIS

Wide ends of a long bone

16

Bone structure
FLAT BONES

Type of bone with thin flattened shape
Ex: scapula, ribs, and pelvic bones

17

Bone structure
IRREGULAR BONES

Type of bone having irregular shape
Ex: vertebrae

18

Bone structure
LONG BONES

Type of bone longer than it is wide
Ex: femur, humerous, and phalanges

19

Bone structure
MEDULLARY CAVITY

Large open cavity that extends length of shaft of long bone
Contains yellow bone marrow

20

Bone structure
PERIOSTEUM

Membrane that covers most bones
Contains numerous nerves and lymphatic vessels

21

Bone structure
RED BONE MARROW

tissue that manufactures most of blood cells
Found in cancellous bone cavities

22

Bone structure
SHORT BONES

Type of bone that is roughly cube shaped
Ex: carpal bones

23

Bone structure
SPONGY BONE

Bony tissue found inside bone
Contains cavities that hold red bone marrow
Also called cancellous bone

24

Bone structure
YELLOW BONE MARROW

Located mainly in center of diaphysis of long bones
Contains mainly fat cells
