chapter 5 Flashcards
(14 cards)
acronym for reactivity series
plants - potassium sometimes -sodium like - lithium cold - calcium magnesium coz - carbon zinc is - iron highly - hydrogen contagious -copper
group 1 reactions
water- fizzing and gives off hydrogen gas
dilute acid- explode
group 2 reactions
water- very slow reaction
dilute acid - fizz, giving off hydrogen gas
trans metals
they don’t really react
may be a slight steam when put in water
metal + acid = ……….+………….
salt and hydrogen
metal and water = ………+……….
metal hydroxide and hydrogen
oxidation
the process of gaining oxygen
reduction
the loss of oxygen
two ways of extracting metals
extraction using copper - only works with thing that are are less reactive than carbon
electrolysis
properties of strong acids
ionise completely
release hydrogen
properties of weak acids
do not ionise fully
reversible
only a small proportion dissociate to produce hydrogen ions
the lower the ph the …….. hydrogen molecules there are
more
what is salt
salt is a compound formed when hydrogen in an acid is replaced by metal ions
how to make salt crystals
1.add acid to a beaker
2. add powdered metal a spatula at a time
3, continue adding to the mixture until there is excess
4. filter the mixture in the beaker to remove any excess
5 leave to dry and then u are left with salt and water
