Paper 2 Questions Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is an endothermic reaction?
When the energy is taken in by the surroundings into the reaction
What is an exothermic reaction?
An exothermic reaction is when energy is lost by the surrounding
What does a catalyst do?
They provide on alternative reaction pathway which requires less energy
What is Le chatliers principle?
If a system is at equilibrium and a change is made to any of the conditions the system will try and counteract it
What are the first four alkanes ?
Methane
Ethane
Propane
Butane
Two differences between short and long chains
Short chains - low boiling point
- lower viscosity
-higher flammability
Long chains- higher boiling point
-much more viscous
- lower likelihood to turn into a gas
What are two different ways of cracking?
Catalytic cracking- vaporising a large alkane and pass it over a hot catalyst
Steam cracking - very high temperature
What is phytomining?
- Growing plants on copper rich soil
- burning the plants leaving ash
- using electrolysis
What is bioleaching?
Some differences in alkanes and alkenes
Alkanes- saturated hydrocarbon/ only one bond/ when add bromine water:no change
Alkenes- more reactive/unsaturated/double covalent bond/testing using bromine water/ produced by cracking
What is a pure substance?
A pure element or compound and is not mixed
What is a formulation?
Is a mixture designed as a useful product
How to work out Rf value
Rf value: distance moved by substance/ distance moved by solvent
What is shortwave radiation?
Can go through the holes in the greenhouse gases and is then absorbed by the earth
What is long wave radiation?
If infrared radiation which cannot get out and stays inside the atmosphere
What are the problems caused by sulfur dioxide
Sulfur’s dioxide causes acid rain and respiratory problems
What are the problems caused by Carbon particulates?
They cause global dimming
Two ways of metal extraction
- Phytomining
- bioleaching
How do we use the life cycle assessment
Elephants - extraction Make - manufacturing Useful- use and operation Deodorant- distribution Daily- disposable
How do we test for alkenes
Using bromine water
What factors affect the rate of reaction?
Pressure Surface area Catalyst Temperature Concentration
